SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Baseball team ran its league-leading winning streak to seven games after claiming both ends of a doubleheader to sweep the season series against Cameron on Saturday at Dickson Stadium.
The Rattlers, now 32-10, won a 3-1 pitcher's duel in game one before sweeping their fourth opponent of the year with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. The series win keeps the Gold and Blue within striking distance of first place in the Lone Star Conference standings, as they trail UT Tyler by one game with two weeks left in the regular season.
In addition to the rain holding off, the Rattler fans were treated to two stellar pitching performances, some great defensive plays, and timely hitting as the teams played four games in 29 hours.
St. Mary's heads out on the road for the final time in the regular season, playing a four-game series at UT Permian Basin starting on Friday. The Rattlers then wrap up the regular season with the Patriots at Dickson Stadium April 24-26.
GAME ONE (StMU 3, CU 1)
Junior
Gabe Cook (San Antonio) became the second pitcher this season to throw a complete game, as he allowed only one run on three hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. He joins
Brandon Vasquez (Round Rock, Texas) on the complete game list for 2026, and remains undefeated on the year, moving to 6-0.
The offense spread out six hits among six different hitters, while freshman
Blake Allen (Bulverde, Texas), sophomore
Rob Gonzalez (Pleasanton, Texas) and senior
Jacob King (San Antonio) each collected an RBI.
King's RBI was the first of the game, as he doubled down the left field line to score
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) from second in the bottom of the second inning. The Aggies tied it with their lone run in the fourth, but the Rattlers immediately answered. Allen took the defense by surprise, laying down a bunt down the third-base line that allowed
Matt Gauna (San Antonio) to score from second base as the ball rolled into the outfield grass. Gonzalez added an insurance run in the fifth inning, scoring
Ryan Alaniz (San Antonio) from second on his single between third base and short.
GAME TWO (StMU 7, CU 1)
Eight of the nine Rattlers' hitters posted at least one base knock in game two as StMU scored its seven runs on 14 hits, with two Aggie errors, while the pitching staff held CU to one run on only four hits, and each of the three struck out two.
Junior
Ashton Beaird (San Antonio) and Brooks were each 3-for-5 in the game and Beaird scored three of the team's seven runs. One of his hits was a home run into the bullpen down the right field line to open the scoring in the first inning.
Junior
Ethan Hughes (League City, Texas) tripled in the second inning to score King and double the Rattlers' lead. Cameron got the run back in the top of the third, but StMU scored the final five runs of the game.
In the fifth, Brooks doubled down the right field line to plate Beaird and junior
Dillon Lopez (San Antonio), while King scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Matt Mendez (Natalia, Texas) in the sixth.
Hughes added another RBI in the seventh inning, scoring Alaniz on a fielder's choice hit to second base, and Alaniz scored Beaird from second base in the eighth.
While the hit parade was going on for the Rattlers, junior
Eric Tenery (Kerrville, Texas) was dealing while the team was on defense. He improved to 7-0 on the year after allowing only one run on three hits through six innings.
Senior
Joel Burgess (Atascocita, Texas) pitched the seventh and eighth innings, surrendering only one hit with a walk and senior
Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas) worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out two of the three he faced in a non-save situation.
