LAREDO, Texas — The St. Mary's University Baseball team swept a doubleheader on Saturday against Texas A&M International, winning game one 9-5 and shutting out the Dustdevils in game two 6-0.
The Rattlers win the series 3-1 to improve to 15-7 overall and win their fifth series in the sixth week of the season.
St. Mary's hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville next weekend at Dickson Stadium. The first game of the series is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday. The Javelinas took three of four from Oklahoma Christian and have an identical 15-7 record.
GAME 1 (St. Mary's 9, Texas A&M International 5)
The Rattlers exploded for seven runs in the third inning and plated one each in the first and final frames for the 9-5 win. The team scored its nine runs on 11 hits and was aided by two Dustdevil errors.
All nine spots in the batting order recorded at least one hit, while both senior
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) and sophomore
Rob Gonzalez (San Antonio) were 2-for-4. Brooks drove in four runs, while Gonzalez collected two of the other three.
Senior
Gabe Cook (San Antonio) improved to 2-0 on the year. He pitched the first four innings of the seven-inning contest, with the Dustdevils scoring four runs on five hits against him. He walked two and struck out two in his first start of the 2026 campaign. Junior
Matthew Janecek (Houston) pitched two innings, allowing one run on one hit and three strikeouts, while senior
Edward Mendoza (Eagle Pass, Texas) threw a scoreless seventh, giving up one hit.
Matt Mendez (Natalia, Texas) sparked the Rattlers' offense in the third, taking the first pitch of the inning to centerfield for a double. The team batted around in the frame, scoring seven runs on five hits with three walks and an error for the 8-1 lead. The Dustdevils answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and one in the fifth for the 8-5 tally. A Brooks home run in the top of the seventh provided the final run for the Rattlers and the 9-5 score.
GAME 2 (St. Mary's 6, Texas A&M International 0)
Senior
Eric Tenery (Kerrville, Texas) had his second-straight quality start, flustering the Dustdevils hitters all day. He improved to 4-0, allowing only one hit through six innings with four strikeouts and two walks, and he never let a runner past second base.
Senior
Joel Burgess (Atoscocita, Texas) didn't allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings, but walked four and hit a batter, and Mendoza pitched the final 1 1/3 innings with a hit and a strikeout to keep TAMIU off the scoreboard.
Sophomore
Ryan Alaniz (San Antonio) had the hot bat in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI. Brooks added another two hits, and Gonzalez drove in two.
St. Mary's scored two in the third, one each in the fifth and sixth and two in the ninth for the 6-0 win. It is the team's first shutout of the season.
