Ford Shutout Lifts Softball to Sweep over Stangs

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Softball team pushed its winning streak to three games with a Friday afternoon sweep over Midwestern State, 3-1 and 2-0.

The Rattlers improve to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in the Lone Star Conference, while the Mustangs drop to 3-17 on the year and 1-11 in LSC action.

St. Mary's hosts Lubbock Christian on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Lady Chaps swept a doubleheader in Austin against St. Edward's on Friday.

GAME ONE (St. Mary's 3, Midwestern State 1)
The Rattlers came back from a 1-0 deficit, scoring one in the fifth and two in the sixth for the 3-1 victory.

A big reason for the comeback was the defensive plays that sparked the offense. Junior Bryley Westfahl (San Antonio) made three great plays at second base, including beating the runner to first on a grounder to the right side of the infield and a diving catch on a line drive up the middle. Senior Reagan Tennill (Corpus Christi, Texas) also made two solid plays in the seventh inning with runners on second and third to preserve the win.

Senior Ariella Saenz (Pharr, Texas) improved to 6-3 in the circle. She pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on seven hits with two strikeouts, while junior Emery Aguilar (Georgetown, Texas) earned her first save of the year, getting a groundout to retire the only batter she faced.

Westfahl was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Tennill and sophomore Miah Corona (Eddy, Texas) were both 2-for-3, and Corona and Banda both doubled. The Rattlers also stole four bases in the game, with senior Abigail Dela Rosa (La Grange, Texas) swiping two.

GAME TWO (St. Mary's 2, Midwestern State 0)
Senior left-handed pitcher Breanna Ford needed only 78 pitches to throw a complete two-game shutout in the nightcap. She struck out two and didn't walk a single batter as she became the fourth different Rattler to throw a complete game shutout in 2026, joining Emery Aguilar (Georgetown, Texas), Emily Ayala (San Antonio) and Saenz.

The offense scored one run in the fourth and one in the fifth for the 2-0 win as Tennill and Samiya Johnson (Corpus Christi) each drove in a run. Dela Rosa was 2-for-3 in the game.

Corona had the defensive play of the contest, fielding a hard-hit grounder off first base and hustling to first to beat the runner, rolling her ankle in the process but remaining in the game.
