RICHARDSON, Texas — The St. Mary's University Baseball team swept the Lone Star Conference Baseball Athletes of the Week on March 23, as
Ashton Beaird earned Hitter of the Week honors and
Gabe Cook took home Pitcher of the Week honors.
Beaird, a junior second baseman from San Antonio, hit .500 with a grand slam and nine RBI to help lead the No. 18-ranked Rattlers to a road series win over St. Edward's. Beaird also scored four runs, was hit by three pitches and drew one walk. He did not strike out and played errorless defense. Beaird's grand slam came in the third game with the Rattlers up 1-0 in the fourth inning, kicking off an eight-run frame for the Gold & Blue. His blast helped StMU take the lead in the series, which they went on to win 3-1. Beaird's performance also kept the Rattlers atop the conference standings and led them to their ninth win over 10 ballgames. He has hit safely in every game he's played during that stretch.
Cook, a junior left-handed pitcher from San Antonio, tossed six shutout innings with six strikeouts and allowed just one hit to earn the win on the road against St. Edward's. Cook did not walk a batter and had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings. His performance helped the Rattlers take a 2-1 advantage in the series. It was Cook's third straight start after beginning the season in the bullpen. He is 2-0 over that stretch, and the Rattlers have won all three of his starts.
Both are first-time winners of the weekly award, and Beaird becomes the second Rattler to win hitter of the week, joining
Garrett Brooks, who earned the award in week one.
