Deja Vu All Over Again... Softball Wins Day Two with Identical Scores from Day One

CONROE, Texas — The St. Mary's University Softball team kept things rolling with two more victories on Saturday at the DII First Pitch Invitational, matching the scores from Friday with a 4-1 win in game one over Simon Fraser and walking off game two for a 3-2 decision over Chadron State.

The Rattlers are now 4-0 on the season, and will wrap up the tournament with a game against Saint Martin's on Sunday at 10 a.m.

ST. MARY'S 4, SIMON FRASER 1
Senior pitcher Breanna Ford (Corpus Christi, Texas) started the first six batters she faced in the game with a strike, en route to fanning five for her first win of the season. Ford pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits, and she walked two and hit a batter. Senior Emily Ayala threw the final 2 2/3 innings, giving up only two hits for her second save of the year.

Offensively, senior Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi) continued to shine, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, while junior Samiya Johnson (Corpus Christi) – batting out of the eight hole – went 2-for-3 and scored two of the team's runs. Johnson led off in two of the three innings where the Rattlers scored, singling up the middle in the third and doubling to left field in the fifth.

The Rattlers collected 10 hits in the game, with two going for extra bases, as Johnson doubled and junior Iliana Melendez (Seabrook, Texas) tripled, blasting a shot to left to begin the sixth. She scored on an infield groundout to first base off the bat of senior Abigail Dela Rosa (La Grange, Texas).

StMU also swiped two more bases, with junior Bryley Westfahl (San Antonio) stealing her fourth bag of the season, while freshman Peyton Miers (San Antonio) stole the first of her collegiate career.

ST. MARY'S 3, CHADRON STATE 2
It was Tennill who provided the fireworks in the seventh inning again for the Rattlers. The Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh with two runs on three hits. With one out and Miers on second base, Westfahl walked, and the pair moved up on a passed ball. Tennill hit a sharp grounder to second, but the second baseman overthrew home plate as Miers scored for the win.

Melendez continued to have the hot bat, going 3-for-3 with another triple, an RBI and a run scored. She collected three of the team's five hits in the nightcap, while Johnson and sophomore transfer Neveah Hallmark (Pasadena, Texas) each had one other.

Freshman Aly Garcia (Edinburg, Texas) pitched five scoreless innings, giving up three hits and four walks, while striking out four. Emery Aguilar (Georgetown, Texas) pitched the next 1 2/3 frames, allowing two runs on four hits, and Ayala picked up her first win of the season, recording a flyout on the only batter she faced in the seventh.
