Men's Basketball Snaps No. 25 DBU's 11-Game WInning Streak

SAN ANTONIO — An off-balance three-pointer as the shot clock expired with 4:29 to play and a pair of free throws with 3.4 seconds left by St. Mary's University senior Wayne Wiggins lifted the Rattlers to a thrilling 66-64 victory over No. 25 DBU on Thursday night.

The Rattlers (12-4, 5-3) knocked off the last remaining undefeated team in the Lone Star Conference, as the Patriots move to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in LSC play, snapping an 11-game winning streak. St. Mary's handed DBU, Eastern New Mexico, and Western New Mexico all their first LSC losses of the year.

Wiggins, from Mansfield, Texas, tied for the team lead with 13 points, and he added two assists and two steals. Junior Justin Britt (Goose Creek, S.C.) also scored 13 and blocked a career-high three shots.

Senior Olaverr Camacho (Barberena, Santa Rosa, Guatemala) posted his third-straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, leading all players in boards. He also tallied two swats and two assists.

Freshman Raken Varkas (Houston) and sophomore Lawyer Jones (Waco, Texas) both came off the bench to tie for the team lead with three assists, and Jones added eight points and two steals. Neither guard committed a turnover in their almost 37 combined minutes of play.

As it has been all season, starting strong was important for the Rattlers, as they improved to 11-1 when leading at halftime. StMU outscored DBU 37-33 in the first half. The Gold and Blue held the lead for 33:11, though the score was tight throughout.

The Patriots had a slight edge in rebounds, 35-to-33, and collected four more offensive rebounds, 13-to-9.

Justin Haire came off the bench to lead DBU with 13 points, while AJ Borden had a team-high eight rebounds and Xavion Brown posted a game-high five assists.

The Rattlers remain at home, hosting UT Tyler on Saturday at 3 p.m. The UTT Patriots lost 95-61 in Austin on Thursday night. The other five LSC games were also all decided by 10 or more points, with three of them having more than a 20-point spread.
