AUSTIN, Texas — The St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory in the Battle of the Saints in Austin, recording the team's first Lone Star Conference win of the season.
The win gives St. Mary's a 1-0 lead in the all-sports season-long competition between the two schools, and gives the Rattlers three points in the conference standings. The Rattlers improve to 2-4-1 overall and 1-3 in league action, while the Hilltoppers move to 2-5-1 on the year and 1-2-1 in conference play.
Freshman
Marily Garza Contreras (Duncanville, Texas) scored the first goal of her career, taking a corner kick pass from senior
Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) and bouncing it into the air with her right foot to blast a left-footed kick into the right side of the goal for the lone score of the night.
It is the second assist of the season for Paniagua, and the 22nd of her career. Paniagua currently ranks third in school history, needing two more to tie Kristen Ferguson (1997-00) for second all-time.
Senior
Haley Faucette (Burlington, N.C.) faced 19 shots on the night, seven of which were on goal, as she tied her season-high saving all seven attempts. Faucette has made at least five saves in three straight games, and posted her second clean sheet of the season.
The Rattlers remain on the road, making the long trek to Canyon, Texas, to face West Texas A&M on Thursday at 6 p.m. StMU then comes home for three of its next four contests, beginning with Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m.
