WICHITA FALLS, Texas — The No. 17 St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team couldn't overcome an early goal by Midwestern State, falling 1-0 in non-conference play on Wednesday evening.
The Mustangs (2-1-2) scored in the eighth minute on a goal by Jaime Villagomez for the lone score of the match. The Rattlers (1-1-2) suffer their first loss of the 2025 season, despite having more shots on goal than MSU (6-to-4).
"This was a very disappointing result tonight," said Head Coach
Johnny Clifford. "We made a careless error early in the game, and it proved to be the difference. We need to be better in the 18-yard boxes in the future and learn from these losses."
Junior
Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas) notched three of the team's six shots on goal, while senior
Andrick Ferrer (Buffalo, N.Y.) added two. The Mustangs edged the Rattlers in total shots, 20-to-18.
Senior goalkeeper
Johnny Thurbin (Lingfield, Surrey, England) recorded three saves, and he was in goal the entire 90 minutes. Defenders
Shea Scally (Insch, Scotland) and
Luke Mulkey (Parker, Texas) also played the entirety.
The Rattlers played a very clean game, getting whistled for only five fouls, half the amount of the Mustangs.
"We will regroup and get ready for another tough one on Friday," concluded Clifford.
St. Mary's remains in Wichita Falls, squaring off with No. 14 Rogers State on Friday at 7 p.m. The Hillcats are 3-0-1 on the year and will be the fourth nationally-ranked team on the docket.
