CANYON, Texas — The St. Mary's University Baseball team continued its hit parade on Saturday, winning both games of the doubleheader at No. 25 West Texas A&M, 11-5 and 14-9.
The Rattlers scored their 25 runs on 27 hits, including nine home runs, bringing the total to 40 hits for the week. The two wins also guarantee at least a split in the four-game series. The final game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday. With the two wins, StMU is now 20-13 on the year, tying last year's win total with 17 games remaining on the regular season docket. The Aggies fall to 24-9 with the two losses.
Game One Recap
St. Mary's scored eight unanswered runs over the final two innings to come back from a 5-3 deficit to win the first game of the doubleheader. All nine spots in the batting order reached base at least once, with senior
Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
Dillon Lopez (San Antonio),
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas),
Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) and
Raithen Malone (Mont Belvieu, Texas) all added two hits each, and Lopez and
Jaxon Daigre (Pinehurst, Texas) each hit a home run to give the Rattlers four in the game. It is the fifth time this season the Rattlers have hit three or more round-trippers in a contest.
Junior
Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas) won his second straight outing. The defending LSC Pitcher of the Week worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts to move to 4-3.
Matt Sandoval (Uvalde, Texas) needed only three pitches to retire the only batter he faced, and
Carlos Flores Jr. worked a perfect seventh inning with two groundouts and a strikeout.
Game Two Recap
The Rattlers scored multiple runs in six of the seven innings, scoring 14 runs on 12 hits with six walks. The team tied its season-high with five more home runs, as both
Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) and Brooks hit two each, and Guajardo left the yard once. The three combined for all 12 RBIs, led by five from Brooks.
Elizondo and Brooks were both 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Guajardo was 2-for-3, and once again, all nine spots in the batting order reached base at least once.
Three pitchers worked two innings each, while Flores Jr. came back in for the final frame. Senior
Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio) gave up two runs on three hits with one strikeout before turning the ball over to
Derek Maples (San Antonio). The freshman allowed six runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore
Brandon Vasquez (Round Rock, Texas) got his first decision of the year as he retired all six batters he faced with one strikeout. Flores surrendered on run on two hits with a walk and he fanned two.
