SAN ANTONIO — Each team had five shots on goal in the regular season finale, but No. 9 Midwestern State was able to get two in net, while St. Mary's University scored only one on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs (12-3-3, 8-2-0) win, paired with a UT-Dallas loss to UT Tyler, gives MSU the regular season championship and the right to host the Lone Star Conference Tournament, while the Rattlers' (3-8-6, 2-7-1) season comes to a close.
Prior to the game, eight seniors were honored for their careers, as the fans celebrated
Johnny Thurbin (Lingfield, Surrey, England),
Luke Mulkey (Parker, Texas),
Calum Murdoch (Christchurch, New Zealand),
Andrick Ferrer (Buffalo, N.Y.),
Enzo Jaques (Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil),
Pau Mateu Deya (Marratxi, Balearic Islands, Spain),
Adrian Cruz (Spring, Texas) and
Daniel Maes (Caracas, Venezuela). Seniors
Santiago Ibarreche (Puebla, Mexico),
Hagen Kyle (Jupiter, Fla.),
Cooper Stephens (Richardson, Texas), and
AJ Valdivia (Perris, Calif.) either participated in ceremonies at their previous institutions or last year and chose not to walk on Wednesday.
The Rattlers scored early, as Ferrer placed a beautiful cross into the box, and junior
Shea Scally (Glasgow, Scotland) scored his first goal of the season in the fifth minute. St. Mary's remained sharp the remainder of the first half, taking seven more shots, but the score remained 1-0 until the 54th minute.
The assist for Ferrer was the 11th of his career, as he concludes his five seasons with 23 points (six goals, 11 assists).
Each team took six corner kicks in the game and had five shots on goal. MSU edged the Rattlers 14-to-12 in total shots taken.
Midwestern State scored twice in the second half to complete the comeback and earn the regular-season championship. Either the Mustangs or the Rattlers have won the regular season each of the last five years, with MSU winning in the odd seasons (2021, 2023, 2025) and StMU winning in the even years (2022, 2024). St. Mary's also won the title in 2019 in its first year in the Lone Star Conference.
