Pair of Spaniards Set to Join Men's Tennis
SAN ANTONIO –
Bill Macom, Tennis Coach at St. Mary's University has announced the addition of two Spanish student-athletes to the Rattlers for the 2021-2022 season.
Both Daniel Matheu and Pablo Munoz-Baroja will provide an immediate impact to St. Mary's and are well spoken of by their previous coaches.
Matheu, from Madrid, Spain will look to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering while competing for the Rattlers.
"Dani is a very competitive player," said Jorge Lora, Matheu's coach for the last three years. "Every time he enters the court we know it will be a hard-fought match. He is characterized for being a great back court player who is very solid and very hard to beat."
"Dani has had a very successful junior tennis career," Macom added. "I have no doubt that he will be an impact player for us. I have been impressed with his enthusiasm for tennis and St. Mary's every time we talk."
Munoz-Baroja enjoyed a solid career at Ferris State University (Big Rapids, Mich.), including winning his final singles match in an upset of the 21st-ranked player in the nation before the season was canceled due to Covid. Originally from San Sebastian, Spain, Munoz-Baroja will obtain his master's degree in industrial engineering from StMU. He collected over 60 career singles wins during his undergraduate play.
"Pablo brings a strong work ethic, great leadership and NCAA Tournament experience with him," Macom said. "We are excited to have him as a part of the Rattler program."
