Foward/Midfielder (1990-1993)

Kyle Thornton came to St. Mary’s wanting to help the soccer program make a name for itself. He certainly accomplished that and in doing so, also made a lasting name for himself at St. Mary’s.

Thornton graduated from St. Mary’s as the program’s all-time leader in goals (39), assists (26) and points (104) — marks that still stand strong in the record books today.

The forward/midfielder earned several accolades throughout his Rattler career, including being named First Team NAIA All-District three straight seasons and Heart of Texas All Conference his junior and senior years. As a freshman, he was named Second Team NAIA All-District IV and was a two-time All-Tournament selection his freshman and junior seasons.

As a three-time captain, no Rattler has ever started or played in as many games as Thornton, who started 79 of the 80 games he played, including a stretch where he started 38 consecutive games from 1990-1991. In all, he recorded eight multi-goal games, including three straight hat tricks as a junior in 1992, to go along with six games in which he logged multiple assists.

But ask Thornton what he’s most proud of, and he’ll tell you it’s the foundation his Rattlers helped lay. Scoring nine goals as a senior, Thornton helped lead St. Mary’s to the District IV playoffs — their first postseason appearance since the late 80s.
