Golden! Maciel, Petersen, Timm crowned at ITA Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas — Ally Maciel faced tall odds. Hannah Petersen and Tyra Timm faced family. 

In the end, these three Rattlers were crowned champions on Saturday as they punched their tickets to nationals. 

Maciel won the singles draw at the ITA South Central Regional Championships, while Petersen and Timm teamed to win the doubles draw final. All three will advance to the ITA Small College Nationals, held Oct. 13-16. 

It marks the third consecutive year that St. Mary's won the ITA singles and/or doubles regional championship.

"All of them faced elimination and overcame," head coach Lisa Dausin said. "There were unbelievable odds against them. I'm so proud of their fight and their poise under pressure!"

Petersen and Timm faced Kaylin Kruseman and Camille Clausse-Pujo in a championship match in which Rattler faithful could not take sides. 

Petersen/Timm, seeded third in the tournament, won a hard-fought match 8-5, securing their spot in the national tournament. 

On the singles side, Maciel twice overcame first-set defeats to work her way past the semifinals round and into the championship. Seeded 13th, Maciel defeated No. 9 Shviadok of Cameron 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to qualify for the final. There, she upended No. 29 Duff of Midwestern State, prevailing 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 to win the title. 

"It's an amazing story for Ally today an amazing story for both doubles teams yesterday," Dausin said.
