Women's Tennis adds Ally Maciel during early signing period

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Tennis picked up a promising recruit during early signing period, signing incoming freshman Ally Maciel who already has strong ties to the Rattlers.

A native from Sugar Land, Texas, Maciel dominated the competition at George Ranch High School in the three years she lettered, earning the District Championship each year.

Maciel was also a three-time Regional Qualifier in her tenure as well as was a two-time State Qualifier and will join the Rattlers for the 2015-'16 season.

"On the court she is calculating, determined and sets a high standard for herself," said head coach Lisa Dausin of Maciel who finished third at State.

Dausin had her eye on Maciel long before early signing period as Dausin signed Maciel's brother, Michael Maciel last season who went on to become the ITA Rookie of the Year in his first season, and saw the two tennis siblings play in high school.

"We first got to meet Ally her sophomore year," said Dausin, "when she and her brother, and fellow Rattler Michael, qualified for the UIL State Tournament in 4A Mixed Doubles. She was impressive at that time but it has been a true joy to watch her development since then."

Maciel's high school teammates also experienced her prominent development, voting her as Team MVP and saw her help the team to two team District Championships and advance to the regional semifinals once.

Maciel will also fit into the Rattlers' high expectations for academics as she is Top 10 percent in her class and is a National Hispanic Scholar recipient.

"Off the court she has done her due diligence in the classroom," said Dausin, "so we will reap the benefit of adding another strong student to contribute to team academic goals.

"Equally important this (Maciel's academic success) bonded the team and all gave an unanimous "nod of approval" in their belief that Ally would easily blend into the strong chemistry the team takes pride in."

Maciel will join a Rattler squad who has had tremendous success over the past four seasons under Dausin, including advancing to the national tournament for the first time in program history last season, that they will hope continue with Maciel joining the team for the 2015-'16 season.

Said Dausin, "Ally will be a big part in helping the Rattlers continue to compete at a high level as we graduate some key players this spring."
